Renata Ozimek’s connection to Copernicus Lodge run deep, as a daughter and caregiver for a resident, president of the Family Council and a donor.
It all started when her brother became ill and needed respite care, and turned to Copernicus Lodge. The excellent care he received led Renata’s parents, Chester and Genia, to attend the Adult Day Program years later when they had health challenges.
Eventually, Genia’s dementia made living at home difficult. Moving into Copernicus Lodge, she was comforted by familiar faces and the opportunity to attend Mass. And when Chester’s health deteriorated too, he was happy to move here and be on the same floor as Genia.
“He took comfort in the good care she was receiving, and liked the gathering spaces, quiet spaces and comfortable places where the two could spend time together,” says Renata.
Sadly, Chester was only at Copernicus a few months before he passed away. “But my mother continues to enjoy the benefits of a superior care facility that doesn’t feel like an institution, due in large part to the Polish community that’s the heartbeat of Copernicus.”
All of the spaces that her parents enjoyed – and all residents do – are meaningful. That’s why Renata is excited about the renewal project that will improve rooms and common areas of the long-term care home, the ground floor dining room, the tenant building hallway and lobby, and main reception.
Over time, she says every home needs repairs, upgrades and design changes to better meet the needs of its residents. “This is true of our own homes and true of Copernicus Lodge. The redesign will focus on increasing safety, accessibility and comfort in each environment, while creating a warm atmosphere that promotes a sense of health and well-being in our seniors.”
That spirit will only be enhanced by the renewal project, Renata says. She’s counting on the goodwill of the community, residents and their families to make it happen. Her hope: “To help Copernicus Lodge renew its living spaces and show everyone that it remains a place to call home.”
